The State-level Republic Day and Bharathiar Day swimming meet, which concluded at Anna Stadium on Thursday, abounded with action and excitement.

The two-day competition attracted over 700 students from 15 divisions – Chennai, Coimbatore, Cuddalore, Dindigul, Erode, Kancheepuram, Kanyakumari, Madurai, Perambalur, Ramanathapuram, Salem, Thanjavur, Tirunelveli, Tiruchi and Vellore. It was inaugurated by Collector Jayashree Muralidharan in the presence of K. Selvakumar, Chief Educational Officer. The meet was conducted in three age categories (under-14, under-17 and under-19) and in all, four strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly) for boys and girls. The under-14 category featured 12 events each for boys and girls, while the under-17 category comprised 17 events each for boys and girls. The under-19 category consisted of 18 events each for boys and girls.

At the valediction, A. Amalraj, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Tiruchi range, said the spirit of participation was more important than winning. He felt that such meets helped youngsters assess their abilities and launch themselves well.

Mr. Amalraj distributed prizes in the presence of P. Kalaiselvan, District Sports Officer, and S. Rathamani, District Inspector of Physical Education.
