All village panchayats in the district have been instructed to temporarily suspend all other work and spend their funds to ensure drinking water supply this summer, said Collector Jayashree Muralidharan here on Wednesday.

At the grama sabha meeting at Perur in Andhanallur union, Ms. Muralidharan said complaints on drinking water supply could be lodged with the district administration by dialling the toll-free number, 1077. Immediate action would be initiated on such complaints.

She informed the villagers that a new drinking water scheme for about 70 habitations in Andhanallur, Manikandam and Manapparai unions would be implemented soon.

Preliminary work is under way and tenders for the scheme will be called soon.

The Collector appealed to the villagers to remain vigilant on child marriage and pass on information on such marriages to the officials by dialling the toll-free number, 1098.

R.Manoharan, chief government whip, said the check dam currently under construction across the Cauvery near Tiruchi would help improve the water table in the area. Srirangam Assembly constituency would soon become self-sufficient in terms of basic amenities, he said.

Later, the grama sabha meeting discussed the development work proposed to be taken up in the village in the current financial year and the implementation of various projects such as Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, Total Sanitation Programme, and Indira Awas Yojana. The meeting was presided over by panchayat president Veeramuthu.
