The Tamil Nadu Hindu Temple Protection Committee has requested the Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to suspend night-time power cuts in Madurai district during the upcoming Chithirai festival.

In a letter to the Chief Minister, Committee State General Secretary P. Sundaravadivel said that the celestial marriage of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Kallazhagar entering Vaigai, which were the highlight of Chithirai festival, were famous across the world.

During the Chithirai festival, devotees, including many women and children, throng the streets to catch a glimpse of the deities.

However, with many of the events taking place at night, devotees would not be able to have a good darshan due to the spate of power cuts after dark.

As such, he requested the Chief Minister to keep in mind the interest of devotees and halt power cuts at nights, according to a press release.
