CHENNAI: Officials of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption arrested a surveyor on charges of taking bribe from a petitioner in Avadi on Tuesday.

According to sources in the agency, G. Rajesh Kumar (33) of Athipattu near Avadi, who runs a fast food centre, lodged a complaint with the Thirumullaivoyal police regarding a civil dispute. The police referred the petition to the Avadi tahsildhar.

When Rajesh Kumar met Avadi Town Surveyor Arumugham (52) to expedite measurement of his property and the adjoining plot, the official demanded a bribe of Rs.15,000.

The petitioner lodged a complaint with the DVAC and a special team led by the Deputy Superintendent of Police, K. Saravanan, was formed to investigate the case.

When Rajesh Kumar went to meet Arumugham on Tuesday, he asked him to get into his car and insisted that Rs.5,000 be paid as the first instalment.

Soon after the money was paid, the DVAC team that was following the car, intercepted it and arrested the surveyor.
