Existing manned level crossings causing traffic problems
The team from State Highways undertook a survey for constructing railway over bridges (RoB) near Mulluvadi Gate and Anaimedu in the city through which the broad gauge railway track goes.
The city witnesses traffic snarls whenever the level-crossing gates are closed for train movement.
The Salem-Vridachalam broad gauge cuts through the city and as and when the railway gates are closed, there will be a chaotic traffic on both sides of the gates. This has led to the demand for rail over bridges at two places – two at Mulluvadi Gate and one at Anaimedu - where the manned level crossings are being operated.
General public and trade bodies have petitioned several for the same. Following their demand, the State has ordered the officials to study the feasibility of constructing rail overbridges to decongest the city and alleviate the traffic movement problems that have been plaguing residents. A team of officials first surveyed the areas near Mulluvadi Gate and Anaimedu.
“After the study the feasibility report will be submitted to the government,” said an official involved in the survey.
The RoBs are to be constructed with share from Railways for which necessary steps would be taken up, he further added. It is expected that once the RoBs are completed, the traffic movement will be smooth inside the city.
