A week before the youth conference of the Bharatiya Janata Party is to be held at the railway ground on ‘G’ Corner at Ponmalai here, the city police have deployed surveillance and anti-sabotage teams to monitor the meeting venue.
Gujarat Chief Minister and BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi will take part in the conference to be held on September 26.
Ahead of the meet, the city police have deployed four surveillance teams and two bomb detection and disposal squads to mount a vigil at the meeting venue as well as in the city. Surveillance cameras had been installed at the railway ground as part of the security arrangement.
The security apparatus has been put in place on the instruction of the Commissioner of Police Shailesh Kumar Yadav. The day-to-day developments are being monitored by the police control room and the city police office, a release here said.
The release said a surveillance team on rounds on Wednesday picked up on suspicion a man who was found carrying a suitcase near the ‘G’ corner.
During enquiry, the identity of the man was established as R. Immanuel (40) of Tiruchi and the team found three non-stick tavas, couple of aluminium stones used for preparing chappatis, a hot box, and a flask inside the suitcase.
As the replies given by the man were contradictory, it was established that he had stolen the suitcase from G. Arokiam of Keezha Ambikapuram while the latter was having a cup of tea in front of a tea shop near the Ponmalai IOW office. Immanuel was later remanded in judicial custody, the release added.
