Commissioner of Police T.P. Sundaramoorthy conducted a surprise inspection at the Saravanampatty police station on Saturday night.
According to the police, the Commissioner, to inspect the night duty operations of the police, moved around the city in civvies in a private vehicle and took the police personnel by surprise.
Mr.Sundaramoorthy went in a private car avoiding the official car and seeing the police chief in civilian dress, personnel at the station took time to realise that the Commissioner was on a surprise inspection.
During his visit to the police station, he asked the officials to strengthen patrolling.
City police have arrested a youth on charges of sending a parcel bomb to a sweetmeat stall employee.
The police said that they had arrested Kalaimani (26), of Rathinapuri for allegedly sending the bomb parcel to Eswaran alias Moorthy, the sweetmeat stall employee.
The parcel was sent about 10 days ago, according to police sources in the city.
The police said that Kalaimani was Moorthy's daughter's estranged lover.
He had reportedly learnt about Moorthy trying to fix an alliance for his daughter and allegedly wanted to teach a lesson to the man.
He assembled a bomb, went to Chennai and couriered the same from there with the sender's name and address as Rishi and Chennai 17.
The police said they are investigating into the matter.
A case has already been registered and further investigation is on.
