Surplus water from Periyar dam has been overflowing towards the Kerala side since Monday morning. Around 272 cusecs was flowing towards Kerala after the dam level touched 136.6 feet (permissible level is 136 feet) at 6 p.m. on Monday, according to a Public Works Department (PWD) source.

The PWD has been drawing 1,855 cusecs of water through the tunnel for Tamil Nadu. The inflow into the reservoir that was 4,484 cusecs in the morning fell to 2,000 cusecs in the evening, the official said.

Meanwhile, Vaigai river continues to be in spate in the wake of discharge of flood water from the Vaigai dam.

The level in the dam was 68.13 feet (71 feet) with an inflow of 8,384 cusecs and a discharge of 6,530 cusecs. However, with rainwater from catchment areas downstream the dam joining the river, the flow in the Vaigai was 13,540 cusecs (as recorded in Viraghanoor regulator) in the morning.

The flood continues to flow over the causeways in the city.

The combined Periyar credit has crossed 8,000-mcft-mark and stood at 8,052 mcft.
