Swift treatment by a team of doctors at Theni Government Medical College Hospital at Andipatti saved the life of a 19-year-old youth.

C. Kottai Prabhu of Kamatchipuram in Periakulam union was rushed to the hospital with a deep cut in his throat around 10.30 p.m. on March 21.

He was struggling for life owing to profuse bleeding and a rupture in his wind pipe.

Hospital Dean Meenakshisundaram and his team found a cut 4 cm deep and 15 cm long cut in his neck.

“Normally, we insert an artificial pipe to give anaesthesia but it was ruled out owing to heavy blood loss and slit in wind pipe, said Meenakshisundaram. Two special surgeries were performed to join the severed wind pipes using an artificial wind pipe. It took three hours for the doctors to complete the surgeries.

After two days, the artificial pipe was removed. Now the patient is out of danger. He is able to speak, drink and eat food, the Dean said on Thursday.

Police said that an unidentified gang had attacked Prabhu and cut his throat with a broken glass bottle.
