MADURAI: The Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Government Rajaji Hospital, will organise the 31st annual conference of Indian Society for Surgery of the Hand, ‘ISSH CON – 2007,’ at Kodaikanal from August 24 to 26.
Briefing presspersons here on Monday, T. Chandra Prakasam, organising secretary of the conference, said that hand surgery as a surgical speciality had been witnessing a steady growth in the last 50 years.
Eminent surgeons from India, the United States, the United Kingdom and Sri Lanka were expected to participate in the national conference.
Apart from 15 guest lectures, 42 scientific papers would be presented on various aspects of hand surgery. Warren C. Breidenbach, a renowned hand surgeon from Kleinert Kutz, Louisville, United States, would deliver a lecture on ‘hand transplantation,’ an emerging area in the field of hand surgery, said M. Chidambaram, organising chairman of the conference.
D.A. Mcgrouther, University of Manchester, United Kingdom, would talk on research on ‘tendon repair and various aspects of wound healing.’
The conference would also throw light on current trends in the management of hand injuries because of machinery accidents and anomalies of the hand, owing to birth defects (birth palsy), role of microsurgery in hand reconstruction and surgical advances in reconstruction of hands affected by leprosy, he said.
