Suicide threat

A Coimbatore Corporation drive to remove an encroachment on Wednesday at G.R.G. Nagar near Sowripalayam was halted after the person accused of encroaching upon the land threatened to commit suicide by self-immolation.

According to sources, Subramaniam, 65, was accused of encroaching upon six cents of land from a portion of a 26 cents belonging to the Corporation. While he had claimed to have title deeds in his favour, the civic body had approached the courts where it was ruled that the land belonged to the Corporation.

As Subramaniam refused to vacate the land despite having been issued notices, a team of Corporation officials came to remove the encroachment. However, Subramaniam had stated that he was going to undertake further legal action and asked them to halt their encroachment drive.

When the officials proceeded further, Subramaniam threatened to commit suicide immediately. Following this, police officials reached the spot and held discussions.

Following the negotiations, the Corporation officials stopped the eviction drive. However, they fenced off the property and installed boards.
