CHENNAI: The State has sufficient rice stock to meet the demand of cardholders for the next three months.

The Civil Supplies Corporation has 2.34 lakh tonnes of rice and paddy stock equivalent to 1.28 lakh tonnes. In addition to this the Food Corporation has a stock of 6.06 lakh tonnes of rice, which is meant for the State.

As the offtake of rice at the public distribution system is of the order of 3.10 lakh tonnes, the available stock will meet three months’ requirement. Meanwhile, procurement of kuruvai paddy in delta districts is in full swing, with 2.1 lakh tonnes procured since October 1. On an average 7,000 tonnes of paddy are arriving at direct purchase centres of the corporation. Tiruvarur tops the purchase with 85,000 tonnes followed by Thanjavur with 80,000 and Nagapattinam with 25,000 tonnes. As kuruvai harverst will go on till December first week, the corporation is likely to procure about 4 tonnes in the current kuruvai season. In the last season, there was no procurement at all, as farmers did not raise the crop due to delayed opening of the Mettur reservoir. Corporation officials here said in the last procurement season, i.e from October 2007 to September, 2008, the Corporation purchased 14.46 lakh tonnes as against the target of 15 lakh tonnes.

Target for this year

The entire purchase was made in samba season only. This year, a target of 16 lakh tonnes had been fixed.

As the condition of samba crop is good, the corporation is confident of achieving the target.
