LPG connections to noon meal centres given

Chennai: The State Government will ensure that there is no delay in the distribution of free uniforms for students of government schools from next year, Social Welfare Minister Poongothai said here on Friday.

“In previous years, students were given uniforms as late as in December. From the next academic year, students will get their books and uniforms as a set,” Ms. Poongothai said, at a function to present liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) connections for Chennai Corporation’s noon meal centres.

She said the switch to LPG as fuel would control the risk of respiratory diseases that cooks of noon meal centres were exposed to while using firewood. Of the 628 noon meal centres in the city, 284 are linked to Corporation schools. About 50 of these school noon meal centres have been given LPG connections.

Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Kanimozhi flagged off a students’ rally for the protection of women’s rights. She said that the practice of dowry degraded women. “Even well educated women pay dowry, but how many know about their property rights? Girls should be taught their rights in school,” she said.
