Students owing allegiance to the ‘Students Federation for Free Eelam’ on Thursday threatened to stage agitations during the IPL matches in Chennai demanding the owner of Hyderabad Sunrisers to drop Sri Lankan players Kumar Sangakkara and Thisara Perera from the team.

At least 40 students who participated in a demonstration in front of the Sun Network’s corporate office at MRC Nagar here were arrested and released hours later. They demanded that the team owner Kalanithi Maran drop the Sri Lankan nationals.

Federation state coordinator V. Prabhakaran said protests would be organised in front of Sun TV establishments across the State in support of the demand.

“We have planned to organise agitations during the IPL matches in Chennai,” he told The Hindu on Thursday.

Parrying questions on the nature of such agitations, Mr. Prabhakaran said the Sun Network management should respect the sentiments of Tamils and remove the two Sri Lankan players from the team.

“We have written to former Union Minister Dayanidhi Maran in this regard. If the DMK has resolved calling upon India to boycott the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) to be held in Colombo during November 15-17, why not ask Hyderabad Sunrisers to drop the Sri Lankan players,” he said.

In a related development, student representatives of nine law colleges in the State met here on Thursday and resolved to work together in the protest against war crimes in Sri Lanka.
