Students take out anti-tobacco awareness rally in Salem

As many as 250 college students took part in a rally to create awareness among the public on the harmful effects of tobacco, here, on Friday. The rally, which started at Hasthampatti roundabout culminated near the Collectorate.

Organised by The Hindu in association with Gnanamani Educational Institutions, Namakkal, City Police Commissioner K.C. Mahali flagged off the rally in the presence of Dr. T. Arangannal, Chairman of the institutions. The rally passed through Cherry Road, Mulvadi Gate before culminating near Collectorate.

This year’s theme is ‘Ban tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship’. The placards carried by students displayed facts on harmful effects of tobacco and how youngsters get addicted to smoking and lose their life at an early stage. The students also distributed pamphlets to the public. Mr. Mahali distributed free copies of The Hindu and the awareness pamphlets to the public near the Hasthampatti roundabout. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) A.G. Babu, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) K. Radhakrishnan, employees of The Hindu , faculty from the college participated.
