Students prove mettle at handball meet

Unbridled enthusiasm of youngsters was on display during the district mini (under-12) handball championship, which concluded here recently.

The two-day tourney, organised jointly by Tiruchi District Handball Association (TDHBA) and Government High School, K.K. Nagar, at the school campus attracted five school teams each in the boys’ and girls’ sections. “The tournament, which provided an opportunity for the participants to showcase their skills was also a platform to identify talent,” said R. Karunakaran, secretary, TDHBA.

The tourney was conducted on a league basis. MAM Matriculation Higher Secondary School and Amala Girls Higher Secondary School clinched the boys’ and girls’ titles respectively. Both the teams won all their league fixtures.

SBIOA Matriculation Higher Secondary School (three wins and one loss) and St. Vincent Matriculation School (two wins and two losses) finished second and third respectively in the boys’ section. Srirangam Girls Higher Secondary School (three wins and one loss) and St. Vincent Matriculation School (two wins, two losses) bagged the second and third spots respectively in the girls’ category. Sathya (SBIOA) and Vishal Pranav (MAM) won the best player and best goalkeeper awards respectively in the boys’ section. Nafeesa Banu (Amala Girls) and Aishwarya (Srirangam Girls) were adjudged best player and best goalkeeper respectively in the girls’ category. At the valediction, Mayor A. Jaya gave away prizes in presence K.S. Mohamed Nizamuddin, former international triple jumper, SP.Annamalai, president, TDHBA, and C.R. Vimala Devi, headmistress, Government High School, K.K. Nagar.
