With a riveting five minute display students of the Crescent Matric and Higher Secondary School walked away with the prize for the best performance in the cultural programme organised by the district administration as part of the 63rd Republic Day celebrations here on Thursday.
Having chosen an apt theme the students effectively portrayed through a well choreographed song and dance sequence how the country broke free from the shackles of British rule.
The members of the Bharat Scout movement in Coonoor who presented a yoga-related programme bagged the second prize.
The third prize went to the inmates of the Government Orphanage run by the district Social Welfare department here.
Among the other items were tribal and folk dances and patriotic songs.
Speaking to The Hindu some of those who have been attending such programmes regularly over the years, said that they are no longer a formality associated with the occasion.
Pointing out that a professional touch was evident in most of the performances this year, they said that it reflected the growing involvement with which the students and teachers are participating.
They added that in the years ahead such programmes will become very competitive.
