: As many as 20 students of a private school sustained injuries after the van in which they were travelling overturned at Kokkumedu near Ponneri on Sunday. According to police, parents of 20 students of the Minjur area engaged the services of Nagaraj, a driver of a private van, to transport their children to the school at Panchetti near Ponneri.

This was following an anouncement by the school authorities that special classes would be conducted on Sunday for students appearing for public examinations this academic year. The driver, Nagaraj, lost control of the vehicle as the front wheel got stuck in the mud and overturned while he tried to overtake another vehicle.

Nagaraj ran away from the spot immediately.

The children were rescued by the police and passersby who managed to break open the windshield of the van.

All the students were immediately rushed to the Government Hospital at Ponneri, where first aid treatment was provided to them.

Later, the school students were referred to different private hospitals as per the request made by their respective parents, police added. The Ponneri police have registered a case and are on the look-out for Nagaraj.
