Students of the Madura College celebrated Pongal with great fervour, here on Friday.

Faculty and students made pongal in the traditional way inside the college premises, which was decked up in a rural manner with bullock carts and sugarcane. Traditional games such as ‘bambaram’, ‘kitty’, ‘paanai adithal’, ‘goli kundu’, ‘ilavatta kall’ and tug of war, were played both by students and the faculty. Traditional art forms such as ‘karagattam’, ‘kavadiattam’, ‘oyilattam’ and ‘thappatam’ were also performed by the students.

According to R. Murali , Principal of the Madura College, the celebration was organised to popularise the traditional rituals and to celebrate Pongal in a rural milieu. “We wanted the students to experience the rural milieu, since we felt they were more addicted to modern gadgets and were spending more time indoors”, Mr. Murali said.
