: The fact — an uncontrolled sale of Indian-Made Foreign Liquor is the root cause of all social evils and crimes — was driven home perfectly.

Visitors to the premises of St. Ignatius College of Education, Palayamkottai, where budding teachers had portrayed the proven fact superbly, seemed to have understood it and moved by it. Though the theme of this year’s tableau was ‘Atrocities against women,’ it brilliantly brought out the primary cause of the problems being faced by women today.

Dividing the entire group of 185 students into five teams, the organisers had stunningly enacted the crimes, all unleashed by intoxicated brains, right from acid attacks on girls to the merciless rape and murder of a girl student near Seythnganallur railway station, allegedly by a drunkard recently.

Braving hot sun, the teams showed high degree of dedication in highlighting the social evils and the problems the society, particularly the women.

The very first tableau itself shook the conscience of every visitor. While a lady, carrying a cement mixture basin in her hands, is toiling hard near her house, a thatched shed, a group of men, leisurely sitting near this work place, were gambling and sipping alcohol.

Eve-teasing, acid attack on women, administering spurge milk to girl child as per the ‘verdict’ of ‘naattaamai’ etc. were brilliantly showcased by the students. And, the future teachers also provided a solution to tackle the attack on women: ‘Learn martial arts and face boldly the attackers.’

Though she might have read all these incidents in dailies or watched them on television sets, Mayor Vijila Sathyananth, who inaugurated the programme here on Tuesday, was just moved on seeing the powerful message silently given out by every team.

“This is only an attempt at highlighting the problems being faced by women and sensitising the society to attacks on women physically and mentally… And, we don’t want to indict the official machinery or any individual alone for the present situation,” pointed out C.R. Gladys Stella Bai, coordinator of the event.
