Students of Government Arts College, Thanthonrimalai, and Government Arts College, Ayyarmalai, near Kulithalai boycotted classes and staged demonstrations on Thursday demanding that Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa be declared a war criminal and punished for the crimes against humanity.
The protest, spreading across the State, found its echo in the district on Thursday. Students of Government Arts College, Thanthonrimalai, boycotted classes, gathered on the Palayam Road, and held a demonstration. A large number of girl students vociferously participated in the demonstration. Holding placards eulogizing slain LTTE chief Velupillai Prabhakaran and his dead son Balachandran, many students demanded that Mr. Rajapakse be declared a war criminal and punished.
They wanted the Centre to support the U.S.-sponsored resolution against Sri Lanka on human right violations at the UNHRC. Some students tried to burn an effigy of Mr. Rajapaska but the police prevented them. Meanwhile, students of Government Arts College, Ayyarmalai, staged a protest near their college and boycotted classes.
