A second-year student of a government college affiliated to the University of Madras stabbed another student on the campus in Tiruvottiyur on Thursday.

Police identified the students as S. Tamilarasan and K. Ezhilarasan, both students of Tamil literature at the college.“ On Thursday, at around 11.30 a.m., they started arguing over a petty issue, said police. As the argument escalated, an agitated Tamilarasan brought out a knife, which he had hidden under his shirt and kept stabbing Ezhilarasan until other classmates and teachers intervened.

Ezhilarasan sustained serious injuries on his stomach and hands and was rushed to Government Stanley Hospital by teachers and other students. Doctors said his condition was stable but he would need to be monitored continuously as he had suffered a huge loss of blood. .

Tamilarasan, who sustained minor injuries, was arrested.

Tiruvottiyur police filed a case of attempt to murder against him.Later in the day, Tamilarasan was lodged in Puzhal prison.
