Agitated public take ‘custody’ of the vehicle
ERODE: A minibus ran over a 14-year-old school student at Soolai in Periya Semur on Thursday morning.
The incident happened when the girl, D. Uma Maheswari, was going to school on her bicycle. Eyewitnesses said the bus driver, trying to negotiate a curve while talking on the mobile phone, went over a speed breaker without decelerating, lost control of the vehicle, hit the girl’s bicycle and finally ran over her. The girl, who was rushed to the Government Hospital, Erode, died.
Members of the public, who witnessed the incident, stoned the vehicle. They broke the windshield, windows and the glass at the rear. The bus driver and conductor fled the scene of accident. The agitated public also took ‘custody’ of the vehicle. The Erode police who rushed to the spot, tried to pacify the crowd. And, as their efforts failed, they resorted to mild lathi charge.
Soon, a posse of policemen came to the spot and brought the situation under control. After negotiations with the public, the police took possession of the vehicle. The girl’s father Devendran works at a puncture shop.
