The death of D. Rajesh (16), a student of polytechnic college near Cheyur, in an accident near the institution on Monday late evening created a mild flutter on Tuesday.

The relatives of the deceased initially refused to accept the body, which was brought to the house near Veerapandi here, stating that there were no assurances of compensation from the management of the institution.

The body was taken to cemetery after revenue officials and college authorities promised them of relief amount.

Police sources said Rajesh died and another student Vivek Kumar (17) sustained injuries when some wooden planks used for construction works under way on the first floor of the academic block in the polytechnic college, fell on them while they were walking towards the college bus on Monday evening.

Rajesh succumbed to injuries at the Government Hospital at Gobichettipalayam in Erode district on Monday night.

The Cheyur police had registered a case on the incident with the building contractors and college management as accused.
