TIRUNELVELI: Tuticorin-based Sterlite Industries (India) Limited extended financial assistance to M. Ramaraj, a physically challenged poor student from Idaiyarthavanai near Surandai in the district, on Saturday for pursuing his higher studies.

Mr. Ramaraj, who secured 1,001 out of 1,200 in Plus Two, got admission at PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore. However, he could not join the college owing to poverty. After The Hindu published a story on the plight of Mr. Ramaraj, Sterlite Industries had announced that the company would sponsor the student.

Keeping the promise, Prasad Suryarao, Vice President (Operations), handed over a cheque for Rs. 48,865 towards tuition fee for first-year at a function held on the company’s premises in Tuticorin. Sterlite will also bear the tuition fee for the remaining years of his studies.

Joseph J.M. Peeris, General Manager (Human Resources) and R. Rajasekarapandy, Head, Corporate Social Responsibility, were present.
