TIRUVARUR: A new broad gauge line between Nagapattinam and Tiruturaipoondi via Velankanni, Sembiyam Mahadevi, Palakurichi, Tirukuvalai and Ettukudi will be laid at a cost of Rs. 137.99 crore covering a distance of 33.50 km.

Union Minister of State for Railways R.Velu laid the foundation stone for the project at Tiruvarur on Friday.

R. Ramanathan, Chief Administrative Officer (Construction), Southern Railway, who spoke on the occasion, said that 11 big bridges and 74 small bridges will be constructed in this stretch. Twenty two manned level crossings will be put up. Three hundred acres of land will be acquired for the project.

The Minister agreed to consider the demand from people of Tiruvarur to put up an arch depicting Nagore Dargah, Velankanni Church and Hindu temples in front of Tiruvarur railway station to show the secular nature of the area.
