MADURAI: The police handed over gold jewels weighing 218 sovereigns, stolen from various parts of the city in the last two months and since recovered, here on Thursday.

Following complaints of theft and burglary in many parts of the city, special teams were formed to secure the accused. Based on a tip off, the police arrested a gang. Besides the gold jewels, four gold coins, six silver coins, 1.5 kilograms of gold, seven kilograms of silver, 14 mobile phone sets, three two-wheelers, Rs. 60,000 in cash and 17 bicycles were also recovered, a police officer said.

In the last two years, special teams recovered stolen property worth Rs. 1.39 crore in the city.
