CHENNAI: A habitual offender who committed a robbery in the Purasawalkam area on May 10 has been arrested and detained under the Goondas Act.

The police said C.Selvaraj alias Chinraj (39) of Puzhal snatched a four-sovereign gold ring from Vinayagam in Purasawalkam after threatening him with a knife. When local people tried to apprehend him, the accused threw stones at them and escaped.

A special team formed to investigate the case arrested Selvaraj and recovered stolen goods worth Rs.18 lakh from him.

Selvaraj was convicted in more than 100 crimes and this was the ninth time that he was being detained under the Goondas Act.
