CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu police commandos are the best force among all States, said K.P. Jain, Director General of Police.
Speaking at a black belt awarding ceremony for 22 Special Task Force (STF) snipers trained in karate here on Tuesday, he said that the State commandos are way ahead of their counterparts in other States in terms of training.
The ceremony, held at the Tamil Nadu Commando School in Adyar, started with a surprise reception to Mr. Jain in the form of a commando jumping from a tree to give him a bouquet.
Soon, Mr. Jain fired a Kalashnikov to mark the beginning of display of karate skills. The 22 STF men trained for nine months to receive the accolade.
Under the leadership of C. Sylendra Babu, Inspector General of Police, STF, the snipers, sporting karate uniform, started with a demonstration of defence techniques. Punches and blocks thrown enthralled the audience which included other senior police officers, STF staff and their families and media personnel.
The stage was set for the second event of the evening – karate skills, requiring utmost concentration.
The commandos smashed 25-kg ice blocks and pile of bricks in one shot.
The men displayed sheer power of the most powerful part in the human body during combat – the elbow.
Apart from pain enduring exercises including attack by eight men at a time, the evening also witnessed an unarmed commando’s skill of handling a hostage situation. A few daring fire rescue skills evoked standing ovation.
The ceremony ended with Mr. Sylendra Babu’s stunt of riding a motorcycle through five rows of tube lights.
