Groundwater tapping from patta lands for sale by individuals will not be allowed.

TIRUVALLUR: Steps will be taken to check the unauthorised tapping of groundwater for commercial purpose by private parties from their "own land", the Rural Development and Local Administration Minister M.K.Stalin, has said.

Speaking to reporters here at the District Collectorate on Friday, Mr. Stalin said that hereafter tapping of groundwater resource from patta lands for sale by individuals would not be allowed.

Extraction of ground water for distribution was permitted in the past, in view of severe drought conditions. However, some of them turned this privilege it into a a business.

Responding to a question regarding an amendment made by the previous government in the Chennai Municipal Corporation Act to enable the conduct of Council meetings once in three months, Mr. Stalin said that the particular provision would be repealed by enacting suitable amendment to the Act. Further, certain powers that were taken away by the AIADMK government would be restored to the of local bodies, he said. Earlier, Mr. Stalin reviewed schemes implemented through his departments in the district.
