Exhibition-cum-sale in 19 unions in Tirunelveli district from January 18 to 27
TIRUNELVELI: To provide significant momentum and verve to the marketing of self-help group products, christened `Ponbharani', the district administration and the District Rural Development Agency have planned to conduct exhibition-cum-sale of these products in all 19 unions in the district from January 18 onwards.
The exhibition-cum-sale would be held between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the block development offices at Alangulam, Tenkasi and Shencottai (January 18), Keezhapaavoor, Kadayanallur and Vasudevanallur (January 19), Palayamkottai, Sankarankovil and Kuruvikulam (January 20), Maanur and Melaneelithanallur (January 23), Nanguneri and Kalakkad (January 24), Valliyoor and Radhapuram (January 25), Cheranmahadevi, Pappakudi, Ambasamudram and Kadayam (January 27).
The district, with 13,588 SHGs comprising 2,40,3239 members, has received financial assistance under various heads including loans to start business ventures to the tune of Rs. 87.12 crore.
Though SHG products are of high quality and cheap, SHG members find it difficult to popularise and market their goods in a big way.
Realising this problem, the DRDA constructed a spacious building near the new bus-stand at Vaeinthankulam near Palayamkottai exclusively for selling SHG products such as terracotta, Pattamadai mats, fibre products of Cheranmahadevi, garments etc.
Moreover, SHGs are being encouraged to market their goods at the weekly shandis being held across the district and at the regional and zonal-level exhibitions.
Now, the union-level exhibition-cum-sale will boost the marketing of the products.
"The public should visit the exhibition and buy the products," Collector Atul Anand has said.
