District Revenue Officer A. Shanmugasundaram on Thursday said that the preliminary works for acquisition of land for airport expansion has commenced. Officials were planning to complete the entire exercise within six months.

Mr. Shanmugasundaram said that government orders were expected appointing a District Revenue Officer exclusively for the purpose of handling the land acquisition related matters. Already three tahsildars – Murugan, Balakrishnan and Rafi Ahmed – have assumed office and three surveyors have commenced the work.

Work relating to measurement and fixing of outer line boundary for the airport complex has commenced and 90 per cent of the work is over. Within one week, the entire work of fixing outer line boundary will be over.

The proposal is to acquire 612.97 acres of which 204.53 acres are from Kalapatti village, 60.60 acres from Uppilipalayam, 47.60 acres from Singanallur, 298.18 acres from Irugur and 2.06 acres from Neelambur village. The required land would be handed over to the Airport Authority of India in six months.
