Music director performs ‘Kalaignar Vaazhthu’
His struggles for the Tamil language recalled
CHENNAI: Stars showered praise on Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi at a function held to felicitate him on his completion of 85 years of age on Thursday.
His prodigious memory and productivity, accessibility, early rising, knowledge of literature, struggles for the Tamil language and association with the history of Tamil Nadu were repeatedly recalled by various film stars at the function in Kamarajar Arangam, Teynampet.
The programme began with music director Deva performing ‘Kalaignar Vaazhthu’ – a hymn of praise for the Chief Minister. Kalaingar has given Tamil Nadu the gift called Stalin, according to a line in the song.
Actor Rajesh urged the Chief Minister to transcribe ‘Silappadhikaram’ and ‘Kambaramayanam’ for the benefit of the ordinary Tamilian. Actor Manorama requested him to ensure that Tamil pronunciation is not massacred.
Actor Chinni Jayanth had the audience hooting and asking for encore by performing a line of dialogue from ‘Parasakthi’ – a film that Mr. Karunanidhi had written dialogue for – with the idiosyncratic mannerisms of various stars. ‘Kalaignar dialogues’ have become a byword among playwrights, said actor Y.G. Mahendra.
Information Minister Parithi Illamvazhuthi, Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam, director K. Bhagyaraj and director-actor Manivannan were present.
