Stamps are not mere designs but reflection of our heritage and culture, according to J. Charukesi, Post Master General, southern region, Madurai.

At the valedictory function of the two-day district-level philatelic exhibition, organised here on Thursday, she said the Department of Posts has been encouraging philatelists to participate in exhibitions. “It’s the need of the hour to encourage young aspirants. Philately is growing and will continue to grow,” she said.

Terming it as a wonderful hobby, C. S. Raveendran, a philatelist from Tuticorin, said he had been collecting stamps for over 40 years. He appealed to like-minded persons to start collecting stamps based on themes and countries.

A. Jebaraj Michealdoss, another philatelist, said stamp collection is an art.

Prizes were given to winners, who took part in quiz and drawing competitions. Workshop on philately was also conducted as part of the programme.

S. Ramamurthy, Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Virudhunagar Division, welcomed. T. Baskaran, Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Tuticorin Division, S. Selvan Rajadurai, General Manager, Business Development, Tamilnad Mercantile Bank, S. Balachandran, Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Kovilpatti Division, attended.
