MADURAI: A commemorative stamp on Carnatic music exponent Walajapet Venkataramana Bhagavatar, who was one of the principal disciples of Tyagaraja, will be released here by Union Minister for Information Technology and Communications A. Raja, and the first set of stamps will be received by Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers M.K. Alagiri.

The event, scheduled for Sunday, is organised by Walajapet Srimath Venkat Ramana Bhagavatha Seva Samajam, Madurai, at Sourashtra Higher Secondary School. Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, A.G.S.Ram Babu former MP and president of the Samajam, said that Venkataramana Bhagavatar was committed to music and dedicated to his guru. “It was a demand that was made during the 80’s when G.K. Moopanar and A.G.Subburaman were trying hard but somehow it became a reality only after the intervention of Mr.Alagiri.”

He also thanked Mr. Raja and Union Minister for Shipping G.K.Vasan, who along with Mr. Alagiri, took the matter with Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi. The stamp would be in the denomination of Rs.5 and a special cover for Rs.2 will also be sold at the venue. A website, www.venkatramanabhagavadar.org, would also be launched.

An exhibition displaying his Veena, palm leaf manuscripts and ‘padhugai’ would also be organised.
