Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin suppressed facts while replying in the Assembly on the issue of by-election to Ward 45 of Madurai Corporation, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), alleged on Wednesday.

In a statement here, the party urban district secretary, R. Annadurai, said that the State Election Commission had not accepted any of the reasons pointed out by Mr. Stalin for the rejection of the nomination of CPI (M) candidate K. Chandrasekaran.

Instead, the SEC transferred the Assistant Returning Officer for “wrongly” rejecting the nomination. “Hence, it is now revealed that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam had misused its power and got the nomination [of the CPI (M) candidate] rejected through the ARO in an anti-democratic way.” The statement recalled that the Commission had reconsidered a complaint registered by the party on the rejection of the nomination. It had also given a direction to accept Mr. Chandrasekaran's nomination.

In his reply to the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, the Corporation Commissioner and City Returning Officer had said that he accepted the SEC's order on acceptance of the nomination and promised to conduct the election accordingly. “The DMK partymen suppressed all these facts and got 10-day interim stay on SEC order.”
