In response to a fiat made by Police Commissioner

TIRUCHI: Responding to a fiat from the City Police Commissioner Shankar Jiwal a few days ago to renew their registration, several Sri Lankan Tamils here who had come to India from the island nation before December 31, 1992 and in possession of the Special Registration Certificate (SRC) turned up at the Office of the Commissioner of Police here on Friday.

Over 100 Lankan Tamil families furnished their documents with the Commissioner's Office seeking renewal of registration, police sources here said.

Officials attached to the Intelligence Section verified the Special Registration Certificate brought by each family and checked other tour - related documents, their passport and refugee card.

They also verified the names of all family members mentioned in the SRC to ascertain their continued presence. The family heads have been advised to bring the members who could not appear before the officials today to be present for verification within 10 days.

The sources said the families who came for renewal were staying outside the refugee camp.

The two-day exercise, which started today is meant to ascertain the exact number of Sri Lankan Tamils staying outside the camp in the city. The registration would be renewed shortly, sources added.
