The Rameswaram Police have arrested a Sri Lankan Tamil, who tried to clandestinely return back to Sri Lanka from here.

Police said N.Arundavanathan (42) hailing from Silavam village in Puttalam district was moving in a suspicious manner at the railway station, when the temple police, on a tip off from the Railway police, arrested him.

‘Q’ Branch police said he was in possession of 860 US dollars and Rs. 8,000 in Indian currency and had made enquiries with fishermen in the fishing jetty here for taking him to the northern part of Sri Lanka.

Arundavanathan had offered to pay Rs. 20,000, police said.

The Lankan Tamil who came to Tamil Nadu on a three-month tourist visa in April last year, had overstayed and had not registered with any refugee camp in the State for Lankan Tamils.

He was arrested under section 3 (a) read with 6(a) of Passport (Entry into India) Rules, 1950 and section 14 of the Foreigners Act and remanded in judicial custody, the Q branch police said.
