Two Sri Lankan nationals were arrested at Chennai Airport on Thursday on charges of trying to exchange counterfeit Indian currency

According to airport sources, brothers Ismail (31) and Nalir (29) of Jaffna, arrived at the Chennai Airport from Colombo a little past noon by an Air India flight. They stayed back in the airport premises and went to the money exchange counter at the international terminal around 5 p.m. and are reported to have asked for US currency in exchange for 42 numbers of Rs. 500 Indian notes.

Staff at the counter checked the notes and foundthem to be counterfeit. The airport authorities were alerted. Personnel from various State and Central agencies rushed to the spot and whisked away the men to an undisclosed location, where they were questioned. Preliminary investigations revealed that the brothers were traders and visit Chennai often. They would stay in Mannady, north Chennai, purchase goods and sell them in their hometown, Jaffna.
