DMK leader M. Karunanidhi on Thursday condemned the arrest of 75 fishermen and seizure of their boats by the Sri Lankan Navy. The arrests proved that the Sri Lankan government had no genuine interest in resolving issues concerning fishermen on both sides.

“If the Sri Lankan government is really interested in resolving the problems of fishermen it should not have indulged in arrests. We have reasons to doubt the intentions of the Sri Lankan government,” he said in a statement.

The DMK leader said 25 fishermen from Rameswaram were arrested and their boats seized. Another 50 fishermen from Pudukottai and Karaikal along with their boats were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy.

People's hope dashed
