Work bogged down due to financial constraints

Sports fraternity in Karur is happy that its long-time dream of a stadium for sports enthusiasts in the town is becoming a reality. Work on the stadium is nearing completion and if all goes well Karur could boast of a full-fledged stadium in another month or so.

With sportspersons and administrators pitching high their demand for a stadium to cater to needs of young men and women in Karur, the State government gave administrative sanction for constructing the stadium in 2004 and the actual civil works commenced the next year.

The Central government, State government, the Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited, banks and institutions pooled together their resources and sought to give shape to the dream of the sportspersons.

The work got bogged down due to financial constraints for several years between 2005 and now.

There had been phases when no work was undertaken for months together despite the best efforts of administrators and sports officers. It should be said to the credit of individuals and institutions that intervened effectively to restart work with their monetary and material help, and but for their unstinted support the stadium work would not have recommenced, although in fits and bouts to reach the final stages now. The final revised estimate for the construction of the stadium stands at Rs.1.75 crore and sources say that all that money has been garnered and works worth Rs.1.33 crore have already been completed.

Of the Rs.1.75 crore around Rs.91 lakh has been mobilised from the public and institutions while the governments contributed the rest.
