Olympian graces Indra Ganesan College annual sports day

TIRUCHI: Holding of college annual sports meet in the presence of distinguished hockey player V. Baskaran at the time of Hockey World Cup was an exhilarating coincidence for Indra Ganesan College of Engineering at Manikandam near here on Wednesday. Students cherished every moment of hockey Olympian and World Cupper V. Baskaran's presence during their second annual sports day.

“Success comes with hard work. Set goals and strive hard to achieve it,” was the former Indian captain's advice to the students. Dismissing the notion that active involvement in sports will spoil students' academic performance, Mr. Baskaran, who led the Indian hockey team to gold in the 1980 Moscow Olympics, emphasised that great sportspersons also excel in academics. “Taking part in sports will only make a student brighter,” the Padma Shri awardee added. Baskaran, who represented India in two World Cups (1973 at Amstelveen and 1978 at Buenos Aires), commended the efforts of the college students for winning laurels at tournaments conducted at different levels.

Director of Physical Education N. Suresh, in his annual sports report, highlighted the achievements of students.

A colourful marchpast was also a part of the function. Sathiyaseelan of II year Information Technology and Indira Gandhi of I year MBA were adjudged individual champions in the men's and women's sections respectively. MBA department won the overall championship.

Mr. Baskaran gave away the prizes in the presence of college chairman T. Ganesan, secretary G. Rajasekaran, director G. Balakrishnan and Principal V. Rajamani.
