Over 300 students from five schools for special children in the district participated in the sports and games for differently abled children that was jointly organised by the District Differently abled Welfare Department and Selvam Arts and Science College on Wednesday.
The competitions were conducted on the institution premises in connection with the World Disability Day observance earlier this month. The events were conducted in three different age categories for boys and girls.
Events that were conducted during the day were 100 m, 200 m, long jump, high jump, javelin throw, shot put and discuss throw.
The competitions were also conducted for persons with specific types of disabilities.
The sports and games were followed by cultural programmes.
The differently abled children played musical instruments, sang, danced and staged dramas.
Collector D. Jagannathan presided over the valedictory programme and gave away prizes to the winners.
He also distributed other benefits such as scooters with supportive wheels and supportive aids such as artificial limbs to the beneficiaries.
Earlier District Revenue Officer G. Senguttuvan inaugurated the competitions in the morning. Chairman of Selvam Education Institutions Dr. P. Selvaraj, Secretary Kavithra Nandhini Babu, officials from Health and District Differently abled Welfare Department and others were also present during the events.
