SALEM: The Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan appealed to the officials of various departments to ensure that the benefits of Government schemes reached the people.
At the Vigilance and Monitoring Committee meeting here on Wednesday, she said that officials should take efforts to implement the schemes within the stipulated time.
Later, she reviewed the progress of the development works carried out under various schemes, including SGRY, Indra Awaaz Yojana, drought-prone area programme and integrated wasteland development programme.
She also reviewed training programmes conducted for the members of self-help groups in the district.
Allotment of funds
She reviewed the allotment of funds under various schemes to the district. She insisted that the officials of all the departments should participate in the vigilance and monitoring committee meeting.
The Minister later told the media that all the development works of 2005-06, and the first phase of 2006-07 were progressing as per schedule. Many works undertaken in 2005-06 were completed while a few were yet to be finished.
She had advised officials to complete these works on schedule. The Government had directed that the tender procedures for roadworks under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana should be carried out at the district level. This would help complete roadworks as per schedule.
The Union Government had enhanced the subsidy from Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,200, for constructing individual toilets for houses.
The Minister said a large number of people had applied for assistance for construction of individual toilets after increasing the subsidy.
Over 92,000 individual toilets were constructed in the last few years. Meritorious Other Backward Classes, Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students should not be brought under the reservation category Concerted efforts were taken to issue community certificates to the tribals in the district without delay. Issuing identity cards for the physically challenged was also on.The Collector N. Mathivanan presided over the meeting. The District Revenue Officer M. Rajarathinam; the Project Officer of District Rural Development Agency D. Jegannathan; and senior revenue officials were present.
