Dharmapuri: Following the spate of incidents involving gangs in Dharmapuri district, the Superintendent of Police, H.M. Jayaram, has empowered police personnel to open fire if necessary to control the crime.

He said that five special teams had been formed to track down the gangs involved in the recent robberies in Kadathur, Morapur and Pappireddipatti in the district.

Awareness campaign

In six such incidents reported in the past 10 days the gangs targeted isolated farmhouses, attacked the inmates and looted valuables. The teams had left for Salem, Vellore, Bangalore and Andhra Pradesh to nab the culprits. The police have launched an awareness campaign among the locals in the border villages. The district police in association with the Special Task Force (STF) have commenced combing operations in the forests abutting Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. More than 50 checkposts have been formed and night patrolling has also been intensified in the district.
