TIRUNELVELI: Collector G. Prakash held a meeting of heads of all special panchayats on Friday in the wake of the State Governemnt's decision to reintroduce town panchayat system in the State instead of the existing special panchayat system.

Though all town panchayats were reclassified as `special panchayats' in June 2004, the Government has decided to categorise `special panchayats' either as town panchayats or village panchayats, since most of the rules and regulations being followed by the special panchayats resemble the Tamil Nadu Municipalities Act 1920.

Hence a meeting was organised by the Collector and Inspector of Special Panchayats on Friday to tell the heads of these local bodies about the Government's decision.

If the representatives of the special panchayats opt to go back to town panchayat or village panchayat category, the council should pass a resolution in this connection at its special meeting to be held on June 14 and send it to the Collector on June 15, Mr. Prakash told all 36 heads of special panchayats in the district.

Assistant Director (Special Panchayats) A. Vijaykumar, and Executive Officers of all 36 special panchayats attended the meeting.
