Livestock farmers should maintain a clean and hygienic environment, said R. Pazhaniswamy, Director of Animal Husbandry. Addressing villagers during a tour to spread awareness on foot-and-mouth disease in the district on Wednesday, he appealed to farmers to keep a vigil against the the disease. A team of veterinary doctors, revenue and health officials was visiting the villages to spread awareness. .

C. Manoharan, Collector, said that special camps were organised in all 497 village panchayats today. He appealed to farmers to offer adequate feed with grass and honey. Cow sheds should be kept clean and animals with symptoms of the disease should be isolated.

The officials inspected the cattle at Athangarai Viduthi in Gandarvakottai union, Choothiranpatti in Kalabam, and Omakollai in Karambakudi union. They also inspected the special camp at Krishnampatti village near Karambakudi. V. Mahalingam, Regional Joint Director of Animal Husbandry, explained the steps being taken to protect the animals.
