A special cover to commemorate the platinum jubilee celebrations of Rotary Club of Madurai was released by the Department of Posts here on December 27.

The special cover was in recognition of the various service activities undertaken by the club in the last 75 years ever since it was started in November 1938.

S.Chidambaram, president, Rotary Club of Madurai and Rajen Chheda, secretary, in a press release said that the members of this prestigious club have continued to uphold the traditions through relentless pursuit to serve the community.

Rotary Club of Madurai is the second oldest club in Tamil Nadu. The first club – Rotary Club of Madras – was started in 1929 and nine years later the Rotary Club of Madurai was established here. J.M.Doak, an Englishman, was the first president of the club here during 1938-39 and T.S.Krishna of TVS Group was the first secretary.

Eminent persons in the country visited the Madurai club since its inception. During 1966-67, the then Vice-President of India, V.V.Giri, addressed the members in a weekly meeting.

O.P.Ramaswamy Reddiar, the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, delivered a speech in August 1954. His successor Chief Minister K.Kamaraj was a visitor to the Rotary Club of Madurai on August 29,1954. Union Health Minister Rajakumari Amrit Kaur and Rotary International President Joseph A.Abbey were among those who visited the club decades ago.

The special platinum jubilee cover was released on December 27 by Mervin Alexander, Postmaster General of Chennai City Region at a function held in Rotary Hall in the city.
