T. M. Kaliannan, member of the first Assembly (1952-1957) who represented Rasipuram, was on Wednesday honoured by Assembly Speaker P. Dhanapal.
Due to ill health, Mr. Kaliannan, who is now 91 years old, could not attend the function held to mark diamond jubilee celebration of the Legislative Assembly here last week.
Mr. Dhanapal called on him at his house at Rasipuram and handed over a memento and a shawl, according to an official release.
At the function on Friday last, three other members of the first House were honoured. Like Mr. Kaliannan, two of them – N. Mahalingam, industrialist, and R.M. Palaniappan – are nonagenarians. Mr. Mahalingam and Mr. Palaniappan represented Pollachi and Thirumayam constituencies. The third, Krishnaswamy Gopalar, was elected from Pattukottai constituency in a by-election in 1955. They were also given shawls and mementoes.
