Ramanathapuram: Even as several organisations and political parties are gearing up themselves to celebrate the centenary of Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar in a grand manner on October 30, the focus of the police has been shifted to Pasumpon near Kamudhi for providing security during pre and post guru puja period.

Though 25 days are left for the 45th guru puja, the police have already begun ‘spade works’ and intelligent gatherings in almost all southern districts, including Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Madurai and Virudhunagar.

Though the police expect that more than a lakh people would converge at Pasumpon on October 30, various organisations estimate that a minimum of 4 lakh to 5 lakh people and followers of Pasumpon Thevar from all over the State would pay respect at his ‘samadhi’, as this year is celebrated as his centenary.

The grand preparations of the State Government to celebrate the centenary of Thevar have also added colour to the guru puja.

Since various prominent political leaders, including Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi and AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa are expected to visit Pasumpon on guru puja day, the police have expedited the preparation of action and contingency plans. It is expected that the number of police personnel to be posted on bandobust duty for the guru puja this year will be unprecedented.

“We are fully prepared to see incident free celebration. The number of policemen on bandobust duty will be more this year.

The bandobust plan will be prepared based on the projection of visiting people,” Rajiv Kumar, Deputy Inspector General of Police, told The Hindu on Thursday.

The Superintendent of Police, R. Thirugnanam, said that intelligence gathering had already gained momentum in the district.

They would keep a close watch on the activities of local leaders and indoor meetings.
